What is Kung Fu?

Kung FuKung Fu means "skill and effort" and can describe anything that one needs to spend time training in and becoming skillful in. When it means "martial art," Kung Fu refers to the hundreds of styles of martial arts in China, all of which are different. However, there is one thing that all Chinese martial arts have in common and that is the idea that Kung Fu itself is merely skill.

One should not confuse the diversity of styles in martial arts with their common philosophy and basic training. All the classifications tend to over simplify their characteristics. In basic training, for instance all the schools consider the mind, hands, feet and eyes essential. In terms of principles, the martial arts in China has never divorced itself from the traditional chinese philosophy of life. A martial artist for example is always taught to live in peace and harmony with his fellow man, with society and with nature in accordance with the Taoist-Confucius philosophy. A martial artist therefore should display honesty, humility, kindness, patience and diligence. A good Martial artist cannot be provoked, even by words and should never show off. It goes without saying that a person who can competently defend him or herself can be at peace. Where as an insecure person may not. Further more Chinese martial arts implies by no means merely skills and techniques. It also embraces a code of Martial Ethics. Therefore martial arts and martial ethics are considered inseparable in the practice of martial arts in The code of ethics requires a martial artist comprehending the principles of power and responsibility. In other words, it is the resonsibility of a martial artist that he of she does not abuse the power acquired from these skills. No Martial Art Master should train any individual whose character is questionable.

FIRST YOU MUST RESPECT YOUR ANCESTORS, NEXT YOU MUST RESPECT YOUR TEACHERS, THEN YOU MUST RESPECT YOUR MARTIAL ARTS. YOU MUST LEARN KINDNESS, THEN YOU MUST LEARN LOYALTY. ONLY THEN SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED WITH LEARNING KUNG FU. AFTER YOU HAVE LEARNED KUNG FU AND YOU LEARNED CONTROL YOU BECOME A POWERFUL PERSON. STAY ON THE RIGHT PATH, DO NOT PICK ON OTHERS, DO NOT TEACH THOSE WHO ARE NOT GOOD AND LOYAL NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY OFFER TO PAY, EVEN IF THEY ARE FAMILY. AFTER YOU HAVE LEARNED THE USE OF EMPTY HANDS AND STICK THERE IS A GREAT VALUE WITHIN YOU. ANYTHING YOU COME IN CONTACT WITH WILL REFLECT THAT VALUE, EVEN A STONE.

Kung FuKung Fu consists of a number of martially inspired systems for fighting, health development, and dance. As for the hundreds of different styles, some are hard and linear, using punches and kicks. Other styles are soft and circular and do not appear useful for combat. Some schools resemble Karate. Weapons are used in some Kung Fu schools. Grappling methods are generally not used, so Kung Fu arts are usually considered striking styles, although not all styles use strikes.
